Swimming is a kind of sport depending on the basic activities required by human beings in order to harmonise with nature since the early ages. Human beings, firstly observing the movements of animals and imitating their arm and leg movement instinctively, discovered how to swim in a very short time. However, this activity firstly became an organized race in 19th century and England was the first pioneering country in continental Europe. First International Swimming Competitions were organised in London, 1837 and then organized in Australia, 1846. Turkish Swimming Federation was founded under the presidency of Riza Salih Saray in 1957.
