23rd Summer Deaflympics will be held on the dates of 18-30 July in Samsun. The organization which has 93 years of past since the Olympics organized in Paris in 1924 created its own heroes over time as well as almost all of the international competitions. As always, the firsts and the mosts are in the leading position while creating heroes as well as in the Deaflympics history.

The first countries which participated Deaflympics in the history were France, Belgium, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, and Romania respectively. The Dutch Hendrik Nicolini Van Der Heyden, who participated in the organization hosted by France, became the first female athlete of Deaflympics history. Although the first organization was held in Paris, Sofia and Copenhagen are the two cities that hosted most Summer Deaflympics with two times. The United States is the first country which hosts and participates the Summer Deaflympics outside Europe. The USA was participated the games first in London in 1935 and hosted the games for the first time in 1965.

There are two names who left their marks in the games in terms of athletes: Terrence Parkin and Cindy-Lu Bailey. South African Parkin in the category of male, Australian Bailey in the female's category are the athletes who won the most medals in number. Parkin won 33 medals, 29 of which are gold, Bailey won 29 medals, 19 of which are gold.

THE YOUNGEST WAS 12, THE ELDEST WAS 66 YEARS OLD

Other names that draw attention, as well as the most successful athletes in the games, are the youngest and oldest champions. Rohit Bhaker of India has the title of the youngest champion in the history with the gold medal that he won in Badminton at the age of 12. The eldest athlete who won the gold medal was Aira Tuulikki Kilpelainen experienced bowling championship at the age of 66 in Taipei in 2009.
 
THE BIGGEST ATTENDANCE IS IN SAMSUN

Turkey hosting the games for the first time in Samsun will organize the most participated organization of the history with more than 4,500 athletes. İsmail Otamış is the athlete who won our first medal in the history of Deaflympics by winning a bronze medal after the games that Turkey participated in Christchurch in 1989. Our first gold medals' owner is our national football team which became the champion in Kopenhagen in 1997.

In the seven games we have participated so far, we won The most medals in our history with 35 medals in Sofia in 2013.

FABRA IS THE FIRST TO PARTICIPATE IN BOTH 

On the other hand, throughout history, there are athletes who participate in both the Deaflympics and the Olympics. The athlete who participated in both is Ignazio Fabra. Italian wrestler won gold medals in both Deaflympics in Helsinki in 1961 and Belgrad in 1969.
Fabra joined the Olympics in Helsinki in 1952 and in Melbourne in 1956 and won two silver medals in total. Among the deaf athletes, Ildiko Ujlaky-Rejtö is the athlete who is the most experienced one in the history of Olympics. The athlete of Hungary: represented his country in Rome 1960, Tokio 1964, Munich 1972, and Montreal 1976.
