Referee Ömür Bozkurt, who received first aid training under the protocol signed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with the Ministry of Health, administered a vital intervention to the Brazilian football player who collided with his rival from Great Britain in the bronze medal match at Deaflympics and swallowed his tongue.

In the 89th minute of the bronze medal match played between Brazil and Great Britain women's national football teams on the 11th day of Deaflympics Samsun 2017, Brazilian Lara Geovana Neves, who collided with his rival Lhathini Pushpalingham, tumbled down to the floor. When the football players realized that Neves did not breathe, they panicked and the referee of the competition, Ömür Bozkurt, managed to save the life of the player with critical intervention.
 
Bozkurt, who said that he received first aid training in a seminar organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the framework of the protocol signed with the Ministry of Health, narrated the time of the incident as follows:
 
“While jumping for a header, the players collided head-to-head. I approached the player on the ground. He was lying on his back, his pupils had disappeared. He was not breathing. His tongue was blocking his throat. I held his tongue for 5 to 10 seconds, then the player started breathing. At this time, the medical rescue team had already arrived."
 
Bozkurt who stated that he is very happy to save the life of the athlete who came here from 11 thousand kilometers away, continued: "In sports, we commonly experience these kinds of situations. So I think that we, the referees, the coaches and the athletes should definitely get first aid training.
